VPNs Explained Without Hype

A VPN encrypts traffic to its server—it is not invisibility from accounts or malware.

A Virtual Private Network tunnels your traffic to a provider's server before it hits the wider internet. Nearby networks—café Wi‑Fi, hotel—see encrypted blobs, not which sites you visit.

VPNs do not make you anonymous if you log into Facebook with your real name. They shift trust from the café to the VPN company—read their logging policy and jurisdiction.

They help with censorship circumvention, geo-blocks, and some ISP throttling. They do not stop phishing emails or viruses.

Corporate VPNs connect you to office resources; consumer VPNs are different products.

Free VPNs often monetize you aggressively. If the product is free and not open-source with audits, assume you are the product.

Combine VPN with HTTPS, 2FA, and updated OS. Tor is stronger for anonymity; heavier to use.
